Switches & Bridges

Network Switches & Bridges

A network bridge is a device that connects two or more networks and makes them act as one. For example, suppose you have a computer connected to the internet by an Ethernet cable and another computer with no wireless adapter. In that case, you can use a network bridge to share their internet connection.

A network bridge is different from a network router. A router allows multiple networks to communicate with each other while keeping them separate. A bridge merges two networks into one, making them indistinguishable.

What is Network Switch?

Switches are used to link network devices together and switch data from one port to another based on information from the packets being transmitted. The report complies with the OSI seven-layer model to ensure product interoperability.

What is Network Bridge?

The Network bridge works at the data link layer of the OSI model. This means it does not care about the IP addresses or protocols of the packets it forwards. It only looks at the MAC addresses of the devices on both sides of the bridge and learns which ones belong to which network.

Network bridges can be either hardware or software. A hardware bridge is a device you plug into your network cables or ports. A software bridge is a program that runs on your computer and uses its network adapters as ports for bridging.

Network bridges can improve your network performance and security. By bridging two networks, you can reduce the number of hop packets traveling between devices. This can speed up your data transfer and lower your latency. Also, by creating a single network segment, you can avoid broadcast storms and limit the exposure of your devices to external threats.

What does Layer mean in Switches?

The term "Layer" in switches refers to the OSI seven-layer model, which is a reference model consisting of seven layers, each performing specific functions, that describe how information flows from software on one device to software on another.

The OSI seven-layer model is a conceptual model that characterizes and standardizes the communication functions of a telecommunication or computing system without regard to its underlying internal structure and technology.

Switches for Larger and Smaller Networks

Today's switches are faster, more powerful, and more flexible than ever. Some switches can meet your needs whether you have a small home network or a massive enterprise network.

One exciting development is the increasing prevalence of gigabit Ethernet and even 10-gigabit Ethernet in affordable switches. Even for basic connectivity in a small office or home, gigabit speeds allow for fast transfer of files and minimize lag when accessing network resources. With a high-performance network with streaming media or other bandwidth-intensive functions, 10-gigabit Ethernet opens the door to breakneck speeds and robust performance.

Many modern switches also support features like Power over Ethernet, which sends electrical power over Ethernet cables so you can power devices like wireless access points, IP phones, and network cameras without needing separate power cables. Advanced switches offer conveniences like Ethernet switching, VLAN support, and Quality of Service features to prioritize critical traffic.

When evaluating network switches, consider your current and future needs and your budget. There are great options from brands like TP-Link, Netgear, Cisco, TRENDnet, and Juniper. An inexpensive gigabit switch will likely work great for small networks, while large networks will benefit from more powerful controllers with additional features. With so many affordable yet high-performance options, you can get the perfect switch for your needs.

Different Types of Network Switches

Managed vs. Unmanaged Switches

Should I choose a managed or unmanaged switch? For smaller networks, unmanaged switches are perfectly sufficient and more budget-friendly. They work right out of the box and don't require any configuration. However, managed switches are the way to go for more complex networks. They offer granular control and the ability to optimize your network based on traffic patterns and other metrics. The choice ultimately comes down to how "hands-on" you want to be in managing your network performance.

Stackable vs. Fixed Configuration Switches

Switches also come in either stackable or fixed configuration designs. Stackable switches allow you to connect multiple switches, appearing as one switch and offering high port density. This modular design is perfect for growing networks and maximizing investment. Fixed configuration switches come as-is and cannot be stacked - what you buy is what you get in terms of ports. For smaller networks with limited growth, a fixed configuration may be sufficient. For high-growth environments, stackable switches are preferable for their scalability and flexibility.

Advanced Switching Capabilities

Higher-end managed switches often come with advanced features like Quality of Service (QoS), virtual LANs (VLANs), and high-speed protocols like 40 GbE and 100 GbE. QoS allows you to prioritize significant traffic like voice or video. VLANs are a great security feature allowing you to create virtual networks. And high-speed protocols are essential for networks with bandwidth-intensive applications. The additional cost of these advanced switches can be worth it for future-proofing and maximum performance. But for basic connectivity, these features may not be necessary.
