Hard Drives/Solid State Drives

While HDDs have been around for decades and are familiar to most, SSDs are the new kids on the silicon block. Both have their pros and cons, so let's explore which may be right for your needs.

What is a Hard Drive?

Inside an HDD, you'll find spinning platters coated with a magnetic data storage surface. As the platters spin at up to 7,200 rpm, read/write heads move across the surface to magnetically record and access data. This mechanical nature results in some downsides like noise, heat, and the risk of drive failure if you bump or drop the device. However, HDDs are inexpensive and offer lots of gigabytes for your buck. For basic storage needs without blazing speed, an HDD gets the job done.

What is a Solid State Drive?

Unlike HDDs, SSDs have no moving parts. Instead, they use microchips to store data digitally. This results in cooler, quieter, and more shock-resistant storage since there are no fragile platters or read/write heads. And because data can be accessed instantly rather than waiting for the right part of a platter to spin into place, SSDs are blazingly fast. However, SSDs are more expensive than HDDs, often costing 10 times more for the same capacity. But for a speedy boot drive or favorite apps, an SSD is worth it.

What is a Hard Drive Enclosure?

For the uninitiated, a hard drive enclosure is an often underappreciated piece of hardware that serves a simple but important purpose: it provides an external physical case and connectors for a internal hard drive so it can be used outside of a computer.

There are many reasons why having an external portable hard drive can be useful:

Backing up your computer. The most common reason is for data backup. Having an external drive allows you to easily and regularly backup your computer's internal hard drive to the external one. This protects against data loss if anything happens to your computer.

Extra storage. If you have a laptop or smaller SSD-based computer, you may quickly run out of storage space. An external hard drive provides ample additional storage for your files, photos, music, videos, etc.

Transferring data. The external drive enclosure makes it easy to take your data with you and transfer or access it on any computer. This can be useful when collaborating with others or working across multiple machines.

What to Look for in a Hard Drive Enclosure

Of course, all hard drive enclosures are not created equal. Here are some key things to consider when buying one:

  • Interface: The most common interfaces are USB 3.0 and USB-C which offer fast transfer speeds. USB 3.0 is compatible with most computers, while USB-C is the latest standard but requires a compatible port.
  • Hard drive compatibility: Make sure the enclosure supports the type (2.5" vs 3.5"), size, and connection type (SATA, IDE, etc.) of hard drive you want to use.
  • Build quality: Since the enclosure contains and protects your hard drive, you want one that is well-built from durable materials and won't overheat or short circuit your drive. Look for enclosures with good reviews and ones made by a reputable brand.
  • Additional features: Consider other features like hardware encryption, fan cooling, and RAID compatibility depending on your needs.

What are the Differences between SSD and Hard Disk?

Speed

Solid-state drives (SSDs) are famously faster than hard disk drives (HDDs). SSDs have no moving parts so data access and retrieval is instant. However, the story doesn't end there. The speed advantage of SSDs diminishes with heavy, sustained data transfers that can saturate the interface bandwidth. HDDs may have an advantage here with their streaming performance and larger cache sizes. The complexity of real-world usage patterns means speed is not the only factor to consider.

Silence

SSDs are silent since they have no spinning disks or moving read/write heads. If you have your computer in the same room you sleep, work or play in, the silence of an SSD can be a godsend. The whirring and clicking sounds of a hard drive constantly accessing data can become maddening over time. With SSDs, you'll only hear the sounds of your computer's fans. If silence is golden to you, an SSD is worth its weight in it.

Size and Cost

The capacity and cost-per-gigabyte of SSDs used to be much lower than HDDs but the gap has narrowed significantly. However, HDDs still have the advantage and you get more storage for your money. If you need vast amounts of storage and are on a tight budget, an HDD may be your only viable choice. Of course, you can also have both an SSD for your system and apps, and an HDD for your files to get the benefits of each.

While SSDs generally outperform HDDs in speed and silence, the decision is not straightforward. Carefully consider your unique needs and usage patterns before deciding between an HDD or SDD. Only then will you make the choice that is right for you.

What are the hard drive types?

2.5-Inch SATA Drive

The 2.5-inch SATA hard drive is the most common type found in laptops and some desktop PCs. "2.5-inch" refers to its physical dimension and "SATA" refers to the interface standard. These drives typically range from 500GB to 2TB in capacity and offer decent performance and affordability. As an experienced technology enthusiast, I have stacks of these 2.5-inch SATA drives lying around from older laptop upgrades—they remain eminently useful as external storage drives.

M.2 SATA Drive

For those who want to save every millimeter of space, the M.2 SATA drive is the best option. "M.2" refers to its close-to-the-motherboard form factor that's about the size of a stick of gum. Despite its diminutive proportions, the M.2 SATA drive can achieve capacities of 1TB or more. However, its peak transfer speeds are similar to a 2.5-inch SATA drive. M.2 SATA drives are common in ultrabooks and slim laptops where internal space is at a premium.

NVMe Drive

NVMe stands for Non-Volatile Memory Express. NVMe drives are a type of solid-state drive (SSD) that connects via the PCI Express (PCIe) interface. PCIe is a blazingly fast connection—up to 64 times faster than traditional SATA connectors used for most SSDs and hard drives. This means NVMe drives deliver mind-blowing transfer speeds and access times. System boot times, application loading, and file transfers are lighting quick with an NVMe SSD. These drives do come at a higher cost, but if transfer speed is your top priority, NVMe is worth every penny.

PCIe Drive

While PCIe is primarily used as a connectivity interface, it can also refer to a type of hard drive with flash memory chips connected directly to the PCIe bus. These drives are essentially like NVMe drives but with the flash memory built-in instead of using a standard SSD form factor. PCIe drives offer even lower latency since they cut out the middleman, so to speak. However, they tend to be more proprietary and are mainly found in enterprise and server environments, not consumer PCs.
